Best Online Learning Platforms: How to Choose

Every learning platform claims to teach you something new, but they’re built on very different models, and that difference matters more than the course catalog.

Structured course vs. habit-building. Some platforms are built like a curriculum with a defined start and end. Others are designed around short, frequent sessions meant to build a daily habit. Neither is better — it depends on how you actually learn.

What the free tier really includes. This varies enormously across the category, from a single free lesson to a genuinely complete free product. Don’t assume “free trial” means the same thing on every platform.

Renewal pricing, not just the signup price. Some of the steepest price jumps in software happen here, between an introductory rate and what you’re actually billed after the first term. Always check the second-year number.
